Who You Gonna Call?

Trenton activist Daryl Brooks and
Glenn Beck

Are you aware that police forces are only a recent invention?

Are you are also aware the SCOTUS has determined that your police force is under no obligation to protect you?

Both are true facts.  According to Wikipedia only Philadelphia had police force during the colonial era.  The Philadelphia officers were positioned in watch boxes stationed throughout the city.  In the 1800’s other Eastern cities began to follow suit – Richmond (1807), Boston (1838) and New York (1845).  Wikipedia points out that, “After the civil war, policing became more para-military in character, with the increased use of uniforms and military ranks. Before this, sheriff's offices had been non-uniformed organizations without a para-military hierarchy.”

Prior to that, laws were enforced by elected Sheriffs who called upon local militias when extra muscle was required.  Militias in the U.S. were generally understood to be voluntary organizations of local citizens who banded together for the common defense.  Militia’s were so vitally important that they were enshrined as an essential American institution in the Second Amendment: “A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed."  In the West, local Sheriffs also deputized the armed local citizens as the need arose.

Like most other things, government overtook and professionalized law enforcement.  Has it made America any safer?  I think not and for the following reasons:

1.       The arming of professional police has coincided with vigorous government efforts to disarm its citizens.  The rationale being that an armed citizenry was no longer necessary as law enforcement professionals were sufficient to protect us.

2.       However, experience over time has shown that Americans often need protection from the police.  So numerous are the cases police brutality, corruption and rogue unconstitutional behavior that the “protected” often become the persecuted.

3.       The U.S. Supreme Court has ruled that that local police are under no obligation to protect individuals.
4.       Even if the police were entirely virtuous and were constitutionally obliged to protect us, prevailing economic conditions are such that many cities can no longer afford effective police protection.  In Detroit, it now takes police over an hour to respond to a call.  In that time, an efficient criminal could rob, rape, murder and bury his victim before the cops arrived.  Where’s the protection?

So why am I picking on the cops?  I'm really not.

Earlier this week, the Trenton political gadfly, Daryl Brooks was attacked for no good reason by local hoods.  When I spoke with him on the morning afterward, Daryl mused about how likely these thugs would have been to tangle with him if they feared that he might be armed.

He’s right.  Every New Jerseyan, every American deserves to able to protect themselves.  It is a fundamental human right.

Sure there are plenty of brave, honest and dedicated men in blue who will do whatever it takes to protect and serve their communities.  But it is simply impossible for them to look after our personal well being.  They are not body guards.

It is time that New Jersey lawmakers reconcile themselves to the Founders’ wisdom that an armed citizenry is the best defense alien invaders, common criminals and the incursions of a repressive government.

Get a Free College Education

Germany, that great nation that has gifted humanity with both Marxism and Nazism, has again broken new ground.  Germany is now the first European country to recognize a third, 'indeterminate”, gender.

That’s right, German parents no longer have to settle for the boring old “M” or “F” on their birth certificates.  Instead, they can opt for the “I” indeterminate” option; thereby freeing their offspring from the tedium of boyhood or girlhood.  By taking a cue from their southern neighbor, Germans will be able to endow future generations with the blessing of gender neutrality.

What, you ask, does this have to do with getting free ride to college?  Simple.  If the Indeterminate option catches on in America, as the other aforementioned Germanic innovations have, the first generation of America “I-gender” children will be shoo-ins to win collegiate athletic scholarships.

As college sports fans are aware, Title IX is a portion of the Education Amendments of 1972.  It states (in part) that no person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving federal financial assistance.  Its effect on sports was that colleges that offer scholarships to men in big money making sports such as football and basketball; must offer a comparable number of athletic scholarships to women.  Because of this, enterprising parents have been pushing their daughters into variety of sports in hopes of a free education payout.

Therefore, the path to a free college education should be clear.  If the U.S. welcomes a new, third gender into the mix, local towns and school districts will obligated to provide sports programs for Indeterminate kids in addition to their Boys and Girls leagues.  Likewise, colleges will be required to offer Indeterminate athletic programs to complement Men’s and Women’s sports.  And of course, these institutions will be required to offer a proportional number of scholarships to “I”s as they do to Men and Women.
My guess is that when the I-option is first made available most American parents, outside of Berkley, Cambridge and Hollywood, will be slow on the uptake.  They may skittish about branding little Johnny with an “I” if is not an alpha male or little Susie with the “I” if she is not a beauty queen.  But for those moms and dads with guts and foresight, they will see that giving their youngsters the “I” will virtually guarantee a free ticket to America’s most hallowed halls of learning.

When it comes to the future of higher education, the “I”s have it.

Substance Abuse

August 19, 2013

For Immediate Release:

Washington, D.C. – The U.S. Federal Government will follow precedents set by North America’s major professional sports leagues by initiating own strict substance guidelines.

Effective immediately:

1.       Any elected or appointed member of the Executive of Legislative branches of the Federal Government who says anything of substance will be subject to a fine of no less than $1,000 and no more than $10,000

2.       A second offenders will be subject to an immediate 90-day suspension without pay as well as additional fines to be determined by a three-judge panel

1.       Third offenders will be banned for life from government service

This new policy has been widely endorsed by the DNC and the RNC as well as major news outlets, including the New York Times, the Washington Post, the three broadcast networks, PBS, NPR, Fox News, CNN and MSNBC.

In a related development, Senators Rand Paul, Ted Cruz and Mike Lee along with Congressman Justin Amash have been offered amnesty asylum packages outside of the United States.

Uncle Cholly

As I write this, the big news in town is that Charlie Manuel has been canned.  Lovable Uncle Cholly was the most successful Phillies manager ever.  He won far more games than any of his predecessors and only two years ago set a franchise record for the most victories in a season. He is only one of two Phillies' managers to win a World Series and the only one to take his squad there twice.

However, baseball is a “what-have-you-done-for-me-lately?” business in a “what-have-you-done-for-me-lately?” world”. The past doesn’t count for much except at testimonial dinners.  It’s all about the present and what lies ahead.

My Phils will miss the playoffs for the second straight year and have taken an absolute nose since the All-Star break this year.

American liberty is on the same trajectory as Charlie’s team.  The NSA is looking and listening in on all of our communication.   The IRS is scheming to trip up dissenters.  The government is stocking up on drones to observe us and bullets in case we step out of line.  They are paying for everything that they buy from us with funny money that is soon to be worthless.  Our biggest auto maker is now a government run enterprise and Wall Street, Goldman Sachs is now little more than a print shop for the Treasury.  Soon we will be taking a number to stand in line to receive government dispensed medical care and the Feds will be in full possession of your records.  If you want to get to know yourself, ask the Feds.  They know more about you than you do.

Of course, if you complain too much, the Feds may conclude that you are an Al-Qaeda sympathizing terrorist.  This is proof enough to whisk you away to indefinite detention to a place where no one can find you.

Like the Phillies, America has had a good run but is now in the toilet.  Like the Phillies, liberty lovers cannot count upon the old lions to come the rescue.  Their day is passed.
It is up to the young people to step up and create their future.  We are armed with the technical and scientific tools to create worldwide peace and prosperity if enough people  demand liberty.  Or those same tools and technologies can be turned against by our government overseers, turning the Earth into one big Gulag Archipelago.

Like the Phillies, America stands at a crossroads.  The future is ours to claim or squander.

Beggar Nation

It’s official.  The U.S. of A. is now a beggar nation.  A federal court has declared that begging is a Constitutional right

It should come as no surprise that after a solid century of Progressivism and economic meddling from both parties that America has come to this.

It is also fitting that the ruling came in Detroit, once the pinnacle of America’s industrial might, now the bleeding edge of destitution.

To be sure, I much prefer outright begging to the tax, print and spend welfare state.  It is much more honest and forthright.  Begging is much more forthright than a life on feigned disability or interminable unemployment.  Alms to beggars are entirely voluntary and you can see who your money goes to.  This is entirely unlike the thievery of taxation and the fraud that you money is going to help the poor.  No, it’s going to politicians, bureaucrats and the like who hold the poor in dependency for their own selfish benefit.

Begging has a long and honorable tradition.  St Francis of Assisi and Mother Theresa did it.  The three Abrahamic religions all encourage almsgiving. Jesus himself called upon those who are blessed with riches to help the poor.  But He never held a gun to anyone’s head to do so.

Jesus also taught us to “render unto Caesar what is Caesar’s”.  I’m cool with that and would render unto Obama what is Obama’s.  However, I can’t find his face on anything but rodeo clowns.

NoMo-Town

Democrats want to bail out Detroit (again).  Republicans really have no idea what to do (what’s new?).  Some libertarians propose turning Detroit into a free city like Hong Kong to unleash the healing powers of liberty and free enterprise.

What libertarians and constitutional conservatives should agree upon is that Mo-Town should be become NoMo-Town!

That’s right, no-mo bailouts.  The Feds have bailed out Chrysler twice (remember Lee Iacocca?) and turned GM into Government Motors.  President Obama already called that Detroit’s bailout and claimed that saved Mo-Town from bankruptcy.  How’d that work out?  NoMo!

NoMo UAW with its cushy and inflexible work rules that drove jobs to overseas and to right to work states.  NoMo!

NoMo Public Employee Unions that negotiate fat pension deals that are fiscally impossible to sustain.  The math never worked to begin with.  NoMo negotiating with politicians whose jobs were bought and paid for by the unions themselves.  NoMo!

NoMo welfare that makes it more attractive to have children that you cannot support and to not work rather than do the right thing.  NoMo!

NoMo job killing regulations including minimum wage laws that make it impossible to start and sustain viable private businesses.

NoMo punitive property taxes that make home ownership unaffordable for struggling people.  Detroit has the highest in the state which explains it high abandonment rate.  NoMo!

MoTown was once the shining example of American capitalism.  It offered the highest wages in America for those willing to work and it attracted workers from all over.

NoMo-Town is the vision of America’s future under socialism, corruption and crony capitalism.  It is what East Germany was and is on its way to becoming North Korea.

Do not let the Democrats bail out the politicians or corrupt Republicans shovel money to their corporate friends.  NoMo!

Capitalism for B Students

Back-to-school season is upon us.   In my school days I was adept at absorbing, regurgitating and manipulating the information that was put before me.  That is to say that schoolwork and making grades came relatively easy for me.

But I was also lazy as well as practical.  Good grades were not particularly important for me but I also knew that my parents would be dissatisfied with anything less than a B in each class.     Therefore, at the onset of each semester I made it my business to study the syllabus and determine the minimal effort required to attain the parent-pleasing B grade.

For better or worse, I carried this attitude over into adult life.  Don’t get me wrong, I’m no bum.  However, it was never my ambition to be the tycoon, superstar or master of the universe.  I am not a big risk taker.  But I am glad that others are.

I am thankful that there are intelligent, ambitious and adventurous individuals who create businesses and amass wealth.  I do not envy them a bit.  In fact, I love them because they provide me with the opportunity to serve them, to put in honest day’s work and to earn a comfortable living.  This is how capitalism works for B students, for second tier players like me.

In fact, capitalism also finds places for C, D and F students as well.

In 1988, the Minneapolis punk-band, The Replacements, was opening for Keith Richards on his solo tour.  At the time I remember reading an interview with Replacements’ front man, Paul Westerberg.  The Replacements were notorious for their drunken back-stage and on-stage escapades.  Westerberg, himself a high school dropout, said in the interview that their heroes had always been screw-ups.  It was to this poor choice of role models that he attributed the band’s antics.

However capitalism served this band of drunken, punk screw-ups well.  Capitalist entrepreneurs who owned night clubs, who owned concert halls and arenas, who owned recording studios, record labels and radio stations gave the Replacements a platform to ply their art and take their shot at fame and fortune.

Capitalism is not just for the rich, powerful, ambitious or “greedy”.  Because of Capitalism, these go-getters open the door to the good life for the great unwashed including myself, garage rockers and slacker punks everywhere.
