Fighting For Democracy? For Real?

A Harvard political scientist writes that troubles in Ukraine may draw the U.S. into war.  To the west, American troops will be deployed to Poland to rally the spirits of NATO in the face presumed Russian ambitions.

At the core of Russia’s current crankiness, according to Reuters, is America’s persistent, bi-partisan campaign to bring democracy to the world, and Russia’s doorstep in particular.  Democracy you say, isn’t that the stuff that made America great?  The short answer is “no”.

The American enterprise that commenced in 1776 was never an experiment in democracy.  It was an endeavor in limited governance that sought to syndicate governmental jurisdiction over thirteen sovereign states and one federal authority of limited scope.  Additionally, in each state as well at the federal level, authority was parsed out over three co-equal branches – legislative, executive and judicial.

In no instance were laws to be created by direct democracy.  All legislation was to be created by elected representatives and in conformity with the supreme law of the land, a written constitution.  On top of that a Bill of Rights, that many considered to be redundant, was appended to the Constitution to protect citizens from the government.  In all, the Founders designed a finely tuned mechanism that at once dispersed power so that no one body was preeminent, protected individuals from overbearing and arbitrary government and protected government from the momentary passions of mob rule.

The Founding Fathers cared little for democracy and made no bones about it.  A sampling of their sentiments follows:

“A democracy is nothing more than mob rule, where 51% of the people may take away the rights of the other 49%.” - Thomas Jefferson

“Democracies have ever been spectacles of turbulence and contention; have ever been found incompatible with personal security or the rights of property; and have in general been as short in their lives as they have been violent in their death.” - James Madison

“When the people find that they can vote themselves money, that will herald the end of the republic.” - Benjamin Franklin

“Real liberty is never found in despotism or in the extremes of democracy...it has been observed that a pure democracy if it were practicable would be the most perfect government. Experience has proved that no position is more false than this.”  - Alexander Hamilton

In our own day, activist and author, Brian Phillips opines:

Under democracy the individual is subservient to the majority, that is, the collective. Democracy is a form of collectivism…. The Founders were avid students of history. They studied all forms of government—monarchies, parliamentary systems, democracies, and more. They sought to erect a system that prevented a tyranny of one—such as monarchy—as well as a tyranny of many—such as democracy. The Founders recognized the primacy of the individual and sought to protect his rights.
The Founders established a constitutional republic for this purpose. They limited and enumerated the powers of the federal government, securing for the individual the freedom to act as he judges best. This is precisely what democracy prevents.”
Economist, Hans Hermann Hoppe concurs, “Democracy has nothing to do with freedom. Democracy is a soft variant of communism, and rarely in the history of ideas has it been taken for anything else.” In the introduction to his book, Democracy, The God That Failed, Hoppe traces the rise of the democratic ideal in America at the expense of republicanism and individual liberty.
Hoppe points out how the First World War was an ordinary territorial squabble until the U.S. decided to enter.  Our progressivist president, Wilson, turned it into an ideological struggle to overturn European monarchies and “make the world safe for democracy”.  Being that the war became a philosophical battle as well as a military one, total victory was necessary to purge the world of the ancien regime and to inaugurate a new dawn of democratic bliss.

Things didn't work out so well.  The power voids created by the destruction of prevailing governments as well as the harsh terms imposed on the vanquished opened the door to Nazism, Fascism and Marxist Communism.  The world would be plunged into an even more gruesome war within two decades.  As the principle proponent and exporter of democracy, America would remain at war, be it hot, cold, covert or proxy from the 1940s until today.   There is no end in sight.  We wage wars to assure that every man, woman and child might enjoy the benefits of Western style democracy.

But has democracy even been beneficial to the west?  Hoppe argues “no” and his Failed God, written in 2001 he offers a litany of evidence.  Things have only gotten worse since then.

“…the American system is itself in a deep crisis. Since the late 1960s or early 1970s, real wage incomes in the United States and in Western Europe have stagnated or even fallen. In Western Europe in particular, unemployment rates have been steadily edging upward and are currently exceeding 10 percent. The public debt has risen everywhere to astronomical heights, in many cases exceeding a country's annual Gross Domestic Product. Similarly, the social security systems everywhere are on or near the verge of bankruptcy. Further, the collapse of the Soviet Empire represented not so much a triumph of democracy as the bankruptcy of the idea of socialism, and it also contained an indictment against the American (Western) system of democratic - rather than dictatorial - socialism. Moreover, throughout the Western hemisphere national, ethnic and cultural divisiveness, separatism and secessionism are on the rise. Wilson's multicultural democratic creations, Yugoslavia and Czechoslovakia, have broken apart. In the U.S., less than a century of full-blown democracy has resulted in steadily increasing moral degeneration, family and social disintegration, and cultural decay in the form of continually rising rates of divorce, illegitimacy, abortion, and crime. As a result of an ever expanding list of non-discrimination - "affirmative action" - laws and non-discriminatory - mutlicultural-egalitarian - immigration policies, every nook and cranny of American society is affected by forced integration, and accordingly, social strife and racial, ethnic, and moral-cultural tension and hostility have increased dramatically.

The aggressive expansion of NATO, including the courtship Ukraine, in the service of universal democracy, has pushed the Russian Bear into a corner and he is lashing out.  The pursuit of democracy once again brings us to the brink of global conflict and the extermination of civilization or the species in its entirety.  God forbid.
The solution lies in a radical change of heart and restoration of Founding principles.  America needs to relinquish the illusion that big, centralized government will solve all of our problems and to restore respect for state and local autonomy as well as for private property and individual freedom.

Likewise we need to respect the autonomy of foreign nations to choose their ways of life and their own form of government.   We need to let go of our progressive era instinct that we can forcibly impose a “better” way of life upon Earth’s masses.   This is the genuine American vision, the true conservative vision of George Washington, of Edmund Burke, of Russell Kirk and Robert Taft.  The only way that war will bring “peace in our time” is by killing all beings that are capable of war.

The Wisdom of the Ancients

Although a great number of libertarians are also secularists, there is still a great deal of wisdom to be gleaned for our cause in the pages of the Judeo-Christian scriptures. Beyond religious content, the Bible provides a timeless perspective on human nature and the human condition, which is unchanging.

Therefore, it seems fitting that, during this Easter and Passover season, we take a fresh look at what the ancient texts have to offer to us friends of limited government and private property.

The first lesson, which is often tough for libertarians to swallow, is that liberty is not necessarily a popular idea.  From time immemorial, a great many people have been willing to trade essential liberty for the illusion of a strong ruler who is both a powerful protector and a benevolent caretaker.

Here is the story.  Once the Hebrews settled into the Promised Land there was no central authority.  The people were informally governed by local leaders known as the Judges.  These Judges governed according to the written law of Mosses (think Constitution) not upon individual whimsy or fiat.

However, the people wanted more the rule of law.  They wanted a King, a strong man that they could believe in.  One who would be their protector.  They asked the prophet Samuel to find a king for them. Samuel resisted, warning the people:

"The rights of the king who will rule you will be as follows: He will take your sons and assign them to his chariots and horses, and they will run before his chariot.

He will also appoint from among them his commanders of groups of a thousand and of a hundred soldiers. He will set them to do his plowing and his harvesting, and to make his implements of war and the equipment of his chariots.

He will use your daughters as ointment-makers, as cooks, and as bakers.
He will take the best of your fields, vineyards, and olive groves, and give them to his officials.

He will tithe your crops and your vineyards, and give the revenue to his eunuchs and his slaves.

He will take your male and female servants, as well as your best oxen and your asses, and use them to do his work.

He will tithe your flocks and you yourselves will become his slaves.”

Still the people insisted:   "Not so! There must be a king over us.  We too must be like other nations, with a king to rule us and to lead us in warfare and fight our battles." (1 Samuel Ch 8)

Within three generations, Samuel’s words proved true.  At the expense of his people, Solomon, the third Hebrew king wealth beyond measure let alone a thousand wives and concubines.  When Solomon passed, the people said to his heir, Prince Rehoboam: "Your father put on us a heavy yoke. If you now lighten the harsh service and the heavy yoke your father imposed on us, we will serve you."

Rehoboam consulted his advisers and thought it over for a few days.  They he issued his policy agenda.  He told them in no uncertain terms:  "My father put on you a heavy yoke, but I will make it heavier. My father beat you with whips, but I will beat you with scorpions." (1 Kings Ch 12)

To make a long story short, because the Kings that the people demanded became oppressive, civil war broke out, the Hebrew kingdom split in two and the new weaker Kingdoms, Israel on the north and Judah in the south, were conquered and destroyed by the Assyrians and the Babylonians respectively.

Thus Benjamin Franklin’s observation that, “Those who sacrifice liberty for security deserve neither” proved true.  The Hebrews traded their liberty for a dynasty of oppressors to protect them.  In the end, there was no nation left to protect.

Now let’s fast forward to the New Testament to get some insight into the nature of redistributors.
The scene is this.  Jesus, the iterant prophet is road weary after years of foot travel, preaching, dealing with needy favor seekers and fighting with the authorities.  A female admirer approaches him to offer a relaxing massage with some costly rubbing oil.  Judas, who serves as the treasurer for Jesus’ movement, feigns outrage:

“Then Judas the Iscariot, one (of) his disciples, and the one who would betray him, said, ‘Why was this oil not sold for three hundred days' wages and given to the poor?’ “

We know that Judas’ rage and compassion is contrived as the very next passage tells us:

“He said this not because he cared about the poor but because he was a thief and held the money bag and used to steal the contributions.”  (John 12)

So as you observe this holiday season in whatever way you choose, take some time to reflect.  People are often fearful of liberty.  They lack confidence in their own abilities to self govern and provide for themselves.  Therefore, they readily concede their freedoms and their hard earned money to demagogues who sell false hope and unworkable promises.

Our challenge as always must be to educate ourselves so as to be able confront corrupt authority and to teach our neighbors.  We confront authority with a stern and uncompromising face.  On the other hand, we must learn to lead our friends, families and neighbors with patience and with love.  They too want peace and prosperity but they are human, fearful and fallible as were the Hebrews of long ago.

This blog first appeared on the New Jersey Libertarian Party website during the Easter & Passover seasons of 2103.  It seems worth remembering.

Bunker Hill 2 – The Bundy Ranch?

On a hot July day in 1776, 56 bold souls affixed their signatures to a revolutionary document.  The declaration that they endorsed asserted that each individual human being is entitled to his or her fundamental rights to “life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness”.  Furthermore their missive defined the role of just authority by stating that “to secure these rights, governments are instituted among men”.

I do not recall anything else in America’s founding charter about the rights of tortoises or other fauna. Yet here in 2014 our federal “rights protectors” are bringing armed force to bear in defense of tortoises and in violation one family’s historic cattle grazing rights and began seizing their cattle.

Cliven Bundy’ family has been grazing cattle on this land for over 130 years.  As Mr. Bundy tells it, "My forefathers have been up and down the Virgin Valley ever since 1877. All these rights I claim have been created through pre-emptive rights and beneficial use of the forage and the water. I have been here longer. My rights are before the BLM even existed.".

The Federal Bureau of Land Management (BLM) began contesting this longstanding practice after it had been going on for over a century.  The controversy came to a boil this past week as armed federal agents surrounded the ranch and began confiscating Bundy’s livestock.

Outraged citizens responded by rallying to the Bundy’s support, many from great distances.

Shamefully the Feds tried to herd these patriots into a cordoned off “First Amendment Areas” where they could vent their displeasure.  Is this what the “public square” has become – a limited and constrained space where free expression may be tolerated?  Are dissenters to be stigmatized like smokers and quarantined into cubbies?  Reports of the Feds assaulting freedom lovers outside of the First Amendment Areas” were numerous.

Even more shameful was County Commissioner, Tom Collins, who warned that Bundy supporters “better have funeral plans”.  This man is a traitor to people that he was elected to protect and the Constitution that he swore to defend.  He can learn a lot from local officials like Sherriff Richard Mack, the Constitutional Sheriffs and Peace Officers Association (CSPOA.org) and the Oath Keepers who protect their constituents from unlawful federal harassment.

To his credit, Nevada Governor Brian Sandoval condemned the federal incursion stating that, "No cow justifies the atmosphere of intimidation which currently exists nor the limitation of constitutional rights that are sacred to all Nevadans."   Unfortunately he stopped short of sending in State Troopers or the Nevada National Guard to protect his people.

Happily, as of this writing (4/12/14), it looks like the Feds have backed down and are pulling up states for now.  For Now.

Perhaps the Bundy Ranch will be the new Bunker Hill where a free people come to learn once more that they can stand up to armed oppressors with superior firepower.  But you can be dollars to doughnuts that the Feds will be back, if not here than somewhere else and with greater force and heightened determination.  It is up us, as a free people, to remain vigilant, to rush to each other’s aid and to be brave in the face of force and intimidation.

Post script – what may have won this battle was not the Bundy’s and his supporters’ tenacity but a breaking scandal concerning a  Harry Reid led land grab on behalf of a Chinese solar farm project.  He may want to deflect attention from that sordid deal.

Those Who Live By The Sword (A Sunday Blog)

Most people, even non-believers, subscribe to the Biblical adage that “all who take the sword will perish by the sword.” (Mt 26: 52)

People get it that those who those who make violence, bullying and intimidation a way of life can expect payback.  We celebrate when the ogre gets his just comeuppance.  It’s a storyline staple that Hollywood has ridden to riches for decades.

Many others now also accept the validity of blowback  - the unwanted and violent consequence of military or covert intervention in another nation’s affairs.  This includes sponsorship of repressive regimes such as that of the Shah of Iran.  Angry people kick back with unconventional tactics such as the 911 attacks against innocents on the other side.  The idea of blowback is not an invention of peaceniks; it is a real world phenomenon observed by the CIA.

Sadly, very few people appreciate the level of violence that supposedly benevolent liberal democracies perpetrate upon their own citizens.  Modern states employ fines, seizure, imprisonment and worse to compel compliance with their dystopian schemes.

Heavy handed and controlling central authority is nothing new.  Its long pedigree is detailed by Igor Shafarevich in The Socialist Phenomenon and more recently by Mark Levin in Ameritopia.
Like chronically battered spouses or abused children, many citizens that coercion, compulsion and force are the natural state of affairs or even in their best interest.  Not so!  “For freedom Christ set us free; so stand firm and do not submit again to the yoke of slavery”, St Paul proclaims. (Ga 5: 1).

Ayn Rand puts government’s proper and very limited role into perspective:

“A civilized society is one in which physical force is banned from human relationships—in which the government, acting as a policeman, may use force only in retaliation and only against those who initiate its use.

The government was set to protect man from criminals—and the Constitution was written to protect man from the government. The Bill of Rights was not directed against private citizens, but against the government—as an explicit declaration that individual rights supersede any public or social power”

However the glorious American experiment was short lived.  Rand continues:  “The result was the pattern of a civilized society which—for the brief span of some hundred and fifty years—America came close to achieving.”

Progressivism with its ceaseless battery of taxes, regulations, social engineering, foreign interventions and wealth transfers has stripped away our Constitutional protections.  The Supreme Court, a nine-person tribunal of political appointees has failed to restrain its patrons.

So Americans suffer under the imposition of top down control from central authority.  It makes for a poorer and less just society.  Murray Rothbard observes:

“All forms of government regulation of business, in fact, penalize efficient competitors and grant monopolistic privileges to the inefficient.”

“…no act of the State can ever increase social utility. Indeed, the picture of the free market is necessarily one of harmony and mutual benefit; the picture of State intervention is one of caste conflict, coercion, and exploitation.”

Though it is struggling mightily, the welfare-warfare is on its deathbed.  The campaigns of Ron Paul and the Tea Party movement have awakened Americans to the possibilities of freedom.  The Tenth Amendment Center is leading the charge for nullification as States asset their dormant rights to resist Federal overreach.  The scam of central banks and fiat money is being exposed worldwide.  Throughout the globe, cities and provinces are agitating to break away from central authority.

The prophet Isaiah foretold of the day when the agents of force and theft would give way give way to peace, productivity and prosperity.   “They shall beat their swords into plowshares and their spears into pruning hooks; one nation shall not raise the sword against another, nor shall they train for war again. “  (Is 2: 4)
Although he may not put it that way, capital, the tools of production, must supplant weapons, the tools of death and destruction if civilization is to survive.

Go in peace to love and free the world.
